Materia
Works by Abbey Lakey
Curated by Ava Haitz
Jun 27 - Jul 25, 2026
Second Thursday Receptions: Jul 9, 6 - 9 pm
Tiger Strikes Asteroid presents Materia, a solo exhibition of work by Philadelphia-based artist, Abbey Lakey. On view June 27 – July 25, 2026. Curated by long time friend and collaborator, Ava Haitz, the exhibition connects Lakey’s various creative practices of foraged fibers, handmade paper, natural pigments, found objects, video, image transfer and paint. Her work is rooted in materiality and experimentation. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, July 9, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Materia, meaning matter, mother, substance, as well as the trunk of a tree, the mother of its branches, explores both urban and natural landscape. Often examining and documenting the rituals of the mundane, the work explores urban ecology, material memory, labor, process, intuition, and the imminence of change. Materia invites us to reflect, to touch, to receive and to connect with the materials around us.
Join us on July 11 from 12 - 6 p.m. for Memoria, a workshop where we will memorialize a found object in mulberry fiber. Bring an object you would like to wrap with locally sourced Philly Kozo, led by Abbey Lakey. Suggested donation of $10-$25. All donations support the gallery and production of this exhibition. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
