Eggs Milk Butter references the grocery list that led to the 1796 discovery of lithography by Alois Senefelder in Munich, Germany. Lithography (stone writing) is a planographic printmaking process that uses limestone or aluminum plate that is based on the principle that oil and water repel one another, allowing the image to be printed from a flat surface without carving or engraving. This allows the artist to create gestures that capture the fluidity and spirit of mark making.
Organized by lithographers Alyse C. Bernstein and Ron Wyffels, this group invitational exhibition features 50+ hand-drawn, artist printed lithographs made from stone and aluminum plates. The thirty three artists on view share a Philadelphia-based connection through their practice and study of lithography. Many participants have studied with Ron during his 40 year teaching career or one of the other teaching artists included in the show.
Organizer Bios
Alyse is a multi-disciplined visual artist and educator based in Philadelphia. Raised in New York City and South Florida, she is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she studied lithography with Ron Wyffels and Judith Solodkin. Alyse expanded her knowledge of lithography through advanced study at the Anderson Ranch, La Ceiba Gráfica, Lower East Side Print Shop, and the Tamarind Institute. She has received numerous awards for her work in lithography and taught for many years at the Fleisher Art Memorial and currently operates a print shop at 1241 Carpenter Street Studios.
Ron earned his BFA from State University College at Buffalo in 1973 and his MFA from Montana State University, Bozeman in 1981. He currently teaches crayonstone lithography at the Fleisher Art Memorial and taught crayonstone and aluminum plate lithography at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for 39 years.
His professional experience includes printing lithographs at Landfall Press in Chicago, where he trained under Master Printers Jack Lemon and David Keister. At Landfall (1973–1975), Ron collaborated with renowned artists including Claes Oldenburg, William T. Wiley, and Jack Tworkov.
In 1975, Ron established Stone Roller, a hand-lithography studio at 676 LaSalle Street in Chicago. As Director and Master Printer, he collaborated with Chicago-area artists to produce editioned crayonstone lithographs of exceptional quality.

Also on view during Eggs Milk Butter is Tiger Strikes Litho, a fundraising portfolio of 6 x 8 inch stone lithographs created in collaboration with TSA member Alyse C. Bernstein. Bernstein, Ana Carolina Estarita-Guerrero, Sunny Hsu, Aryel René Jackson, Suji Kanneganti, Alicia Link, Cecilia McKinnon, Henry Morales, and Bryan Warner.
