LOS ANGELES - The touch, the feel of our lives. The Fabric Show is conceived as a sit down dinner for guests with only one thing in common; they are cloth. That being said, the guests hail from very different parts of the woven world.
A collection of 1950’s production patterns are mixed with Dutch Wax fabrics. They sit next to an elaborately woven heraldic shield made of denim and leather with a blazing chrome colored lightning bolt made by James Van Ardsdale. Brooks Hagen’s densely layered jacquard work finds all the colors that can be contained in ‘silver’ then a couple more. Large in scale but soft, they command immediate attention but are rewarding on closer inspection when one can see the play of tension and slackness of the different strands. His small scale fabric paintings read like microscopic enlargements of the most active parts of his jacquard pieces. Stephanie Dotson Uses the comforting gesture of “blanketing” to resurface burnt sticks collected from the aftermath of the tea fire in Santa Barbara. A woven pattern is printed and carefully glued to the wood surface creating a new material identity for the objects destined for a new location..
A Russian ‘pilgrimage’ jacket of the early 80’s is an artifact that carries mementoes, pins from a bygone era, mixing Catholic and Soviet regalia. Nearby, a ten foot tall tapestry depicting Genghis Khan is a contemporary Chinese reproduction of a Venetian Original depicting a Mongolian emperor. It is open to debate whether they will enjoy each others company.
