Worlds Apart: Jacolby Satterwhite

Mar 4 - Apr 8, 2022

Opening Reception: Mar 4, 6 - 9 pm

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Greenville (TSA GVL) is excited to present Worlds Apart: Jacolby Satterwhite, March 4-April 8 at the TSA GVL gallery. The show will present two works by the internationally celebrated artist and South Carolina native. “Shrines” and “We Are In Hell When We Hurt Each Other” are examples of how  Satterwhite’s  mix of digital film, animation,  illustration, and performance fuse to create colorful, intimate and immersive worlds.

TSA GVL presents Satterwhite’s work to explore the idea of intimate worlds and spaces in these times when people’s sense of safe spaces - physical, virtual, emotional - are constantly in flux. Satterwhite’s conceptual art draws on cultural zeitgeist, as well as personal iconography created by his mother and himself, to comment on themes ranging from identity and sexualty to gaming and virtual reality.

Satterwhite is a native of Columbia, S.C., based in New York. His  work has been presented in numerous exhibitions and festivals internationally, including most recently at Haus der Kunst, Munich (2021); Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju (2021); Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH (2021); Fabric Workshop & Museum, Philadelphia (2019); Pioneer Works, New York (2019); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2019); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2019); Minneapolis Institute of Art (2019); Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2018); Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris (2018); and New Museum, New York (2017). In 2019, Satterwhite collaborated with Solange Knowles on her visual album, “When I Get Home.”
