alter - object

Jan 15 - Feb 19, 2022

Reception: Friday, Feb 4, 6 - 9pm

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Greenville (TSA GVL)  is excited to announce their next exhibition, the sixth show in their West Greenville gallery space. alter - object brings together the work of new and veteran TSA GVL members April Dauscha, Mark Brosseau, Suzanne Dittenber, Brooks Harris Stevens, Kevin Kao, Lindsay Smith Gustave, and Emmanuelle Chammah. The exhibition will open on Saturday, January 15th and run through Saturday, February 16th. There will be a reception on Friday, February 4th from 6-9 pm. The show is curated and organized by TSA GVL member Kara Blanken Soper.

alter - object investigates how artifacts, objects, and artworks serve to archive memory. The show’s title references concepts explored in Susan Sontag’s 1992 historical novel The Volcano Lover, which documents, among other things, the obsessions of a wealthy art collector. Taken together, the works in this exhibition signify the “secret” life of objects and their existence beyond the intentions of the person who made them. Objects can be reliquaries for memory, but the catch is: whose memories are contained within them? While examining the “alter-objects” featured in this show, viewers are invited to contemplate an exchange first posed in the prologue of Sontag’s novel:

“Why enter? What do you expect to see?

I’m seeing. I’m checking on what’s in the world.

What’s left.”
