Leo Ryan
Leo Ryan is an interdisciplinary performance artist and experimental filmmaker originally from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. As a nonbinary trans artist, much of their work is auto-ethnographic and reflects their own lived experience of growing up queer in the Deep South and as a queer Southern transplant throughout the continental United States. Their work investigates queer and trans corporealities, with a focus on queer exhaustion, duration, effort, and pleasure. Recently, Leo created and performed for public view (twenty-four), a twenty-four hour durational installation performance and livestream event that combined dance, speaking, moving image, and queer memory work. Their films have screened in Cucalorus Film Festival, Crescent City Film Festival, EXPS/SLC, Pebbles Underground Film and Video Art Festival, and Vinilonga International Short Film & Music Video Festival. In 2023, Leo received their MFA in Dance: Embodied Interdisciplinary Praxis from Duke University. Leo is currently living and working in Raleigh, North Carolina.
