PHILADELPHIA, PA-

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia is pleased to announce the opening of our June exhibition, Elsewhere, featuring  a suite of new photographs by Gillian Pears.

Pears continues to break and install barriers in her new series, blurring the lines between the mundane and imaginary. She creates episodic photographs by constructing spaces using color and varying intensities of light and shadow. The result is a dream like remnant of a memory that speaks directly to the density of human emotion. Beyond formal considerations, one cannot escape the title: Elsewhere. While her previous work may appear grounded in location and on its way to creating a photographic context, she has taken any literal sense of place from the viewer. Often evocative, never nostalgic, the work takes the viewer Elsewhere.

Gillian Pears currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2006 in photography and her BA from The Evergreen State College in 1999. She is the recipient of the Print Center’s (Philadelphia) Honorary Council Award of Excellence and won the Fleisher Wind Challenge at the Fleisher Art Memorial (Philadelphia). In 2009 became an esteemed MacDowell Fellow
